All White, All White, All White.

When I lived in London, I wore a pair of white Vans one evening and was told “You can always spot an American in Europe because you ALL (his emphasis not mine) wear white sports shoes when you go out!” Wanting to fit in, I immediately went back to my flat and put them in the back of the closet, but always wanted to bust them out and I did as soon as I moved to NYC – they were box-fresh new! Eventually when we stop wearing slippers and socks all day, shoes will become ‘a thing’ and just in time for summer, the season of white everything you wear. I’ve selected some white sneakers (or tennies as we called them in growing up in North Dakota), a range of prices that I know you can rock with shorts, khakis or casual pants and even run all over Europe with them on – when we get to travel again! These can all be ordered online and I scoped good size ranges as well.

CALVIN KLEIN JEANS CHUNKY LOW-TOP SNEAKERS $250

When Raf Simons left Calvin Klein, most of the design innovations left with him. I found these shoes identical design to the Calvin Klein 205W39ST, but without the $700 price tag. They are the most comfy sneakers I’ve owned in ages.

adidas Men’s Originals Stan Smith Casual Sneakers $80 $60

Macy’s always has some classic styles at great prices. These adidas Stan Smith’s are that classic at a not-so-classic price! Grab these soon while there are good sizes!

D.A.T.E.CONTRAST PANEL EMBOSSED LOGO SNEAKERS $190 $143

D.A.T.E. named for Damiano, Alessandro, Tommaso and Emiliano – four friends who created small collections by hand before breaking through commercially on sites like Farfetch. Distinctive and understated. Love them!!

Asos Design Dustin Lace Up Sneakers In White $29

ASOS has some great deals stashed away and these well constructed, low-price but sharp as hell sneakers will fit in well with any summer look. They come in wide sizes as well.

Jack Purcell Canvas $65

Converse classics: The Jack Purcell is described as “An effortlessly sharp addition to your closet, with Jack’s signature “smile” at the toe.” I say here here!! They look sharp in black with white toe as well.

VEJA V-10 LOW TOP SNEAKERS $132 $99

VEJA shoes make me crazy: they are super-simple, very comfortable for a wide foot like mine and wear forever – and usually on-sale somewhere. They come in lots of cool variations of this style (white with red/blue/black/green side V detail) so have a look through Farfetch which has a great range of sizes too.

Authentic and Slip-On-style True White Vans $50 each

I’ve worn VANS since the mid-70s when I got my first pair on a family trip to Hawaii (along with my first skateboard, was a big day in Tom’s life). I’ve owned 100s of pair and still by two of each pair, same size – one to wear, one to keep box-fresh for the future. Here’s the classic check in white on white and the Authentic.

adidas® Skateboarding 3MC shoe $64.95

Never was a big fan of adidas skate gear, but these white and off-white puppies are less try-hard and more laid back, with some cool details (waffled tongue, extended suede toecap) and the Zappos price is right too!

Nike SB Charge Solarsoft Men’s Skate Shoes $65 $48.75

Kohl’s is like Asos: dig around and you will find very cool brands, classic styles, great size range and CHEAP! This is a classic skater kick from Nike and at this price, you can get red AND black and wear one of each, then the black pair, then the red pair and you technically get one pair free – GENIUS!!

Gucci Tennis 1977 canvas sneakers $630

OK, I left the bougie Gucci crazy-expensive-for-what-they-are shoes for the very bottom of the list, but goddamn they look good and detailed too all hell. Someone in my house has a pair of these and when the cat’s away the mouse will be wearing these…

Florals: You need ONE, you just do

We will go outdoors again, go to BBQ’s, hang out and wear stuff we don’t wear in the fall and winter. For me, that means short-sleeve shirt and right now I’m thinking florals. OK, I’ve had guys say “That’s a cool shirt on YOU, but I could never wear something like that.” My reply is “You just haven’t found the right shirt!” Honestly you only need one that looks good on YOU: for when you want to wear something fun, when you’re doing something fun or you’re with a fun person – florals = fun. Here’s my picks, a little high-end, a few on-sale and all few Gen-X friendly cuts (not too slim, good untucked, funky not trendy) from my personal favorite guy-shops Farfetch, Urban Outfitters and Levi’s.

Hoodie Refresh

That’s me in the picture above (carefully cropped to remove the SMALL bald spot) and I’m wearing my favorite hoodie (FACT Beastie Boys edition – here’s a used one on Poshmark). I’ve looked around for a Gen-X guy type of hoodie (not too fitted, not too short, a little funky, smart-looking hood ties) and combed Yoox, which always has a good selection of sizes, styles and generally low prices. Here’s my shortlist:

TopMan Hoodie $120 $78

Caterpillar 3D $102 $59

Jil Sander Hoodie $390 (comes in black too)

Love Moschino $264 $161

Wood Wood (I love this brand, great value, lasts forever) $134

Valentino (yes it’s expensive, but huge markdown) $1000+ $560

thank you Gregory for the photo on the beach xx

JW Anderson X Uniqlo…ON SALE!

I bought my first JW Anderson shirt in Hong Kong 5+ years ago and wore it out: simple, a little bit of detail in the right ways and looked good untucked (a Gen-X Men must have, right?). This is JW’s (I’m sure someone must call him that) second collaboration with Uniqlo (another Gen-X Men staple). I grabbed 5 things from the first collaboration and spent less than $200 full-price, and right now some is on-sale. On top of that, some of the sale stuff is reversible, so you are technically getting two styles 🙂 You don’t have to go to a germy store to get them either. Lots of sizes still available, here are my picks:

MEN POCKETABLE PULL OVER BLOUSON (2 COLORS) $49.90
Reversible, two cool colors
MEN WINDPROOF REVERSIBLE HOODED COAT (2 COLORS) $129.90 $99.90
Reversible, two different colors – if you get both you have four coats!!
MEN STRIPED SHORT-SLEEVE T-SHIRT (3 COLORS) $19.90
I grew up watching the Charlie Brown cartoons and this tee is something that Schroeder and probably Peppermint Patty would wear. Uniqlo tee’s last forever and look COOL with pants or shorts. Not on sale, but not a bad price either.
MEN CHAMBRAY LONG-SLEEVE SHIRT / MEN OXFORD LONG-SLEEVE SHIRT (3 COLORS) $39.90 $29.90
The oxford comes in three colors and the chambray just one. The link goes to the oxford shirt page, and the chambray is in a link below the main image – these are staples so get a couple in your size.
MEN POCKETABLE SINGLE BREASTED COAT (3 COLORS) $79.90 $69.90
Classis with cool details, folds easily and comes in three colors – every guy needs one of these – jeans or khakis will be killer with this.

Uniqlo has tons of cool stuff on sale right now, so definitely have a check around, especially in the clearance stuff!

04 / 13 / 2020 Gen-X Men Style / Cool and Timeless Rain Wear

Rainy Day Gear for Gen-X Men

With the rain coming today and more to come here in NYC (more specifically locked down out in East Hampton), I thought I’d post about some of the very cool rain gear available this spring. I think every man needs a simple piece or two of rain gear which can switch from day and work to night and whatever. I’ve picked a few that have great style and look modern and current, but I think will be keepers that will last well beyond this season. I’ve kept mainly to blacks and greys, but a couple of fun color options – and my personal fave – the PONCHO!! There are several other styles, running from around $150 – $1000+ All of these are available from the brand’s website or ssense.com
