When I lived in London, I wore a pair of white Vans one evening and was told “You can always spot an American in Europe because you ALL (his emphasis not mine) wear white sports shoes when you go out!” Wanting to fit in, I immediately went back to my flat and put them in the back of the closet, but always wanted to bust them out and I did as soon as I moved to NYC – they were box-fresh new! Eventually when we stop wearing slippers and socks all day, shoes will become ‘a thing’ and just in time for summer, the season of white everything you wear. I’ve selected some white sneakers (or tennies as we called them in growing up in North Dakota), a range of prices that I know you can rock with shorts, khakis or casual pants and even run all over Europe with them on – when we get to travel again! These can all be ordered online and I scoped good size ranges as well.
We will go outdoors again, go to BBQ’s, hang out and wear stuff we don’t wear in the fall and winter. For me, that means short-sleeve shirt and right now I’m thinking florals. OK, I’ve had guys say “That’s a cool shirt on YOU, but I could never wear something like that.” My reply is “You just haven’t found the right shirt!” Honestly you only need one that looks good on YOU: for when you want to wear something fun, when you’re doing something fun or you’re with a fun person – florals = fun. Here’s my picks, a little high-end, a few on-sale and all few Gen-X friendly cuts (not too slim, good untucked, funky not trendy) from my personal favorite guy-shops Farfetch, Urban Outfitters and Levi’s.

That’s me in the picture above (carefully cropped to remove the SMALL bald spot) and I’m wearing my favorite hoodie (FACT Beastie Boys edition – here’s a used one on Poshmark). I’ve looked around for a Gen-X guy type of hoodie (not too fitted, not too short, a little funky, smart-looking hood ties) and combed Yoox, which always has a good selection of sizes, styles and generally low prices. Here’s my shortlist:
thank you Gregory for the photo on the beach xx
I bought my first JW Anderson shirt in Hong Kong 5+ years ago and wore it out: simple, a little bit of detail in the right ways and looked good untucked (a Gen-X Men must have, right?). This is JW’s (I’m sure someone must call him that) second collaboration with Uniqlo (another Gen-X Men staple). I grabbed 5 things from the first collaboration and spent less than $200 full-price, and right now some is on-sale. On top of that, some of the sale stuff is reversible, so you are technically getting two styles 🙂 You don’t have to go to a germy store to get them either. Lots of sizes still available, here are my picks:
Uniqlo has tons of cool stuff on sale right now, so definitely have a check around, especially in the clearance stuff!
Rainy Day Gear for Gen-X Men
With the rain coming today and more to come here in NYC (more specifically locked down out in East Hampton), I thought I’d post about some of the very cool rain gear available this spring. I think every man needs a simple piece or two of rain gear which can switch from day and work to night and whatever. I’ve picked a few that have great style and look modern and current, but I think will be keepers that will last well beyond this season. I’ve kept mainly to blacks and greys, but a couple of fun color options – and my personal fave – the PONCHO!! There are several other styles, running from around $150 – $1000+ All of these are available from the brand’s website or ssense.com
