Greetings from sunny London with a round-up of stuff that I’m loving! Enjoy and have a great week!

Gaming | Kara The Artifical Life by Quantic Dream

Quantic Dream designed Heavy Rain and have created this creepy-cool video of Kara, an artificial life form rendered in real-time on a PS3, shows what it might be like to be an artificial human some time in the (our?) future.

Video | Wilco and Popeye: Dawned On Me

I loves me some Wilco almost as much as I love cartoons, so Dawned On Me which combines them together makes me say ‘Sufferin Suchatash’ that’s good!

Movie | The Avengers and Norton Anti-Virus

This behind the scenes video may seem like an odd content partnership, but do we care? It’s the Avengers movie! It’s Joss Whedon! It’s opening at theatres soon!!

Music | The Milk Broke Up The Family

Remember when Apple would make those cool iPod ads with cool people dancing around to a cool band you’d never heard? Close your eyes and imagine that to The Milk’s groovy tune.

Lego + Robots | Lego NXTified Robot Lab

Even if you don’t love Robots or Lego you’ll probably think this mash-up of very cool toys, open sourced tech and ambitious thinking is lots of fun and has an ad in there somewhere!

Viral | Upworthy

Launched as “a viral aggregator that promises to find interesting and shareable content on important topics” Upworthy is where you’ll find worthy viral videos (probably no animals being dicks unfortunately). It’s brought to you by the folks behind MoveOne.org, The Onion and a FB founder (not the one from the movie…)

Music | Azealia Banks f. Diplo – F*ck Up the Fun

Azealia Banks performed at Chanel Fashion-type parties and is now a hot hot thing so toss Diplo in the mix on this groovin’ tune and you’ve got a buzzy situation on.

Video | 10 Great Clothing Tips in 60 Seconds

This is a clothing care product demo waiting around for a content sponsor: It’s Spring so time to get your wardrobe sorted and these tips for care and making the old stuff look good!

Robots | A Day In The Life Of A Robot

Wonder what robots do all day? Stuff like us, only cooler and more robotically, like in these stunning photographs from Thomas Jackson.

Apps | How Scott Snibbe Made Bjork’s Biophilia Bearable

Did you dig Bjork’s Biophilia album? Probably not. Did you dig the apps created for each song? Probably. The Creator’s Project digs into the whole thing with creative Scott Snibbe.

Interactive + Social Installation | Shoot My Truck

Machine Guns! Facebook! Sweary gaming dude! Video games! If Beavis and Butthead were on the Cannes Jury this year, they would give Twisted Metal’s Shoot My Truck launch promo best in show!

Robots | Five Ways Robots Are Replacing Humans

As you may have guessed, I never outgrew my fascination with robots. Here are five proof-points to support why robots are gonna get us.
A fun stop-motion film for Lego nerds and real people, too.

Shopping | Interactive Mannequins

An interactive, very life-like mannequin responds to shoppers via motion sensors.

With her debut album out today, it’s all about Lana. I’m not sure what sort of marketing lab experiment happened to create Lana Del Rey, but it surely involved watching a Twin Peaks marathon, simultaneously TIVO-ing American Horror Story and listening to Falling by Julee Cruise while creating this video for Born To Die on their iPad2.

The popular (ahem) sharing site The Pirate Bay has launched a ‘physibles’ category for finding 3D printing templates.

Relive the fun and heartbreak – the heartbreak of running out of space on a cassette – using this social-mixtape maker. Prepare to be young again.

ELECTION FUN | Build Your Own President

Unhappy with your choice of candidates for President? The good folks at Big Spaceship let you Build your own President. Certainly more interesting than any of the current crop!

COMICS | Batman Inc and the JSA return!

The New 52 from DC Comics is cutting six titles and adding six new ones, including a revived Batman Incorporated and James Robinson back on the JSA with Earth 2. Can’t wait for this to happen – I miss my boys!

GAMES | BitGym

Relax. You have to give up your gaming addiction even though it’s January back to the gym time. BitGym lets you play games using face-and-effort control via your iPad while working out.

AUTOMOTIVE | Gracenote MoodGrid

Avoid roadrage with this car audio system which streams Gracenote with a mood-filtered tune selection. Hope there isn’t a “driving really fast and shaking fist at idiot drivers” setting.

DESIGN | DC Entertainment Visual ID

I’ve loved DC Comics since I was a wee child in North Dakota, so I’m a little miffed about the revamp just released for DC Entertainment - sticky labels is the best we can do guys? Judge (harshly) for yourself!

DIGI-SPORTS | NIKE+ FuelBand

More ways to keep track of your fitness goals or just a sexy, digital reminder of 2011′s holiday indulgence? The Nike+ FuelBand tracks lots of stuff about your movement and goals and looks hot, too.

VIDEO | ROME - TWO AGAINST ONE

Awesome Chris Milk video for Danger Mouse side-project with this not-as-cringe-inducing-as-you’d-think duet from Norah Jones and Jack White.

After watching far too many movies set in the future over the holiday break – Christmas classics like Terminator 2, Strange Days, Total Recall and Gattaca – I’ve cast my crystal ball app 10 years out. Check in here on Jan 3 2022 to check my accuracy – if you’re not the human slave of an Earth-dominating giant, ultra-thin robot iPad with digitally implanted tattoos and bionic eyes!! Enjoy 9 links of fun, but scary trends and one chock-full of 2012 social media predictions. Have a great, happy, loving, geeky 2012 and whatever you do, don’t download the Skynet app when it comes out in a few years.

1. Robots Making Everything

Here’s where it begins: With staff suicide rates up, productivity goes down. Solution? Replace the staff with robots – lots of them.

2. Robots Looking After Stuff for Us

Yotel in NYC has a Bell-hop Bot in the lobby which manages the luggage storage and retrieval for guests.

3. Robots Buddies To Hang With

The NAO Robot is very slim, cool, plays music….and will eventually turn on you and enslave you! Have fun and keep it away from the knife drawer!!!

4. Really Cool, Friendly-Looking Robots

Jon Pope is an industrial designer who imagines what futuristic robotic vehicles will look like: friendly, cuddly and hopefully benevolent.

5. iPad Controlled Flying Video Robots

Parrot ARDrone’s are flying, robot-controlled drone-copters loaded with cameras and cool digital toys. Drone Station let’s you control the ARDrone using an iPad or game controller…until it’s had enough and enslaves you, that is…..

6. Luminescent Bacteria Pixels

Digital signage created from ‘biopixels’, using millions of live bacteria connected to digital switching systems, making them into living pixels. Creepy-cool.

7. A.D.D: Adolescent Demo Division

Comics predict the future …. again! In Vertigo’s new comic, ahem, graphic novel A.D.D kids are bred and trained from birth to test video games and media and appear on reality TV shows – sound scary or just like the most awesome job ever?

8. Augmented Reality Contact Lens

Currently being tested on rabbits, micro-circuit enhanced contact lenses will allow us to view AR and digital information sent from wifi to the surface of our eyes. Sign up now for your very own bionic eyes!

9. Make Your Tattoos Digital with MoodINQ

Because we will want to modify not just our bodies, but what we mark them with, the MoodINQ Digital Tattoo Display uses a surgically-implanted, sub-dermal grid called a Canvas, which allows you to digitally ‘print’ tattoos onto your skin. These digi-tatts can be removed and ‘re-inked’ to create new images.

10. 30 Social Media Predictions for 2012

Ok, so one actual bit about predictions and this one is bloody good. Lots of opinions about what social will look like this year, sharply-written and bite-sized! Bring on 2012!

This week’s Tom’s 10 theme is Give and Receive: Links below to much free music (Christmas and otherwise) as well as some stocking stuffers for the geeky guy in your life. Have a great holiday wherever you are and kick some ass in 2012! Cheers Tom

Saatchi & Saatchi LoveMix

Our holiday gift to clients and friends this year is a double-volume-download of 25 original songs written by bands and solo stars from our network of offices. It’s pretty awesome bunch of songs all written to the themes of Love and Hope. I’m not just because our band has a song on it… C’mon, it’s free! Enjoy and share!

Sleigh Bells | Born To Lose

I loves me some Sleigh Bells. They still haven’t returned the top-end of my hearing that got ripped out of my tympanum at their Coachella set. Enjoy their (not at all holiday related) new tune Born To Lose, a hint of new LP Reign of Terror.

Earmilk’s Top 100 Dance Tracks of 2011

I love Earmilk almost as much as I love my dog. In fact, it’s a dead-heat somedays as I never have to feed Earmilk or give it a bath. Earmilk is counting down and giving away their picks of the 100 rump-shakers of 2011. 10 tracks a day leading to Christmas.

Charlie Brown Christmas on lastfm | Vince Guarldi Trio

Only a serious Scrooge doesn’t like Christmas time in the world of Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang. I used to dance my eight-year old ass off to the Charlie Brown theme song and sing along to these tunes from Vince Guaraldi Trio during the CB Christmas special.

Radiohead (were never gonna) Occupy Wall Street

Radiohead’s brand is so powerful that they’re almost like a big, massive multi-national corporation, but with riffs and cool videos. The hoaxster behind the ‘Radiohead gig for OWS‘ is revealed – an interesting case of brand-power, assumed intent and the speed of information.

Road Inc: Interactive iPad Museum of Cars

I love Cars, The Cars and Cars by Gary Numan. I also love Road Inc, an interactive experience on iPad with classic cars and sweet things to play with. This app points the way to where the coffee table art-book will go in the future.

Mini iPad?

Our ads and apps are about to get even more intimate. A really, really, really small incredibly good-looking tablet? Derek Zoolander seems to think so…

FetchNotes: Organising for the Twitter Crowd

Organise your notes and thoughts and lists using a Twitter-like system, which claims to make sense out of random jottings and the piles of lists you make. You can sign-up for the very deep beta version and watch it evolve. I know that there’s a serious multi-player game in here somewhere….

GiftRocket: Personalised Gift Certificates

Want to do that last minute gift that makes it look like you put lots of thought into personally selecting just the right thing? GiftRocket is seriously saving my ass, cuz it lets you select a business-specific gift card for your loved one’s present. US-based at present (get it? PRESENT?) hehehe…

GeekGift: 80s Video Game Circuitboard Watches

Know a Nerd with a semi-full Christmas stocking? Dip and Turn Switches were fixed onto circuitboards to fine-tune the behaviour of old-skool digital stuff and now make stunning bling on groovy retro-watches.

This week has apps to make your work-out fun, a look at what Earth looks like from Santa’s POV, groovy new websites and social platforms and some very cool interaction with surfaces, video and more! For daily updates, follow @tomeslinger on Twitter!

Fitocracy | Turn your work-out into a social game

We should no longer have to do anything mundane anymore since we have smartphones, apps and lots of people trying to gamify everything. If you’re bored with your work-out and you love your EpicWin app, you might need Fitocracy.

Trippy Time-Lapse Video of Earth from ISS

At this time of year, I find myself humbled by many things. When I saw this video of the Earth from the heavens, edited by Michael Konig, this topped my list of holiday-season-humblers. This is what it looks like from Santa’s Sleigh!!! Isn’t it great to be alive???

Audi Interactive Installation at Art Basel Miami

Beautifully crafted and perfectly placed at the flashpoint of modern art coolness recently at Art Basel Miami, this is billed as the imagining of digital driving surfaces in the future. I say ‘uh, yes please!’

One Time Secret

There’s a game in here somewhere …Enter your clandestine content in the One Time Secret text box and with the click of a button you’ll generate a one-use-only link to your secret message.

Kinectic Poetry

I love type but I go CRAY-ZEE for type that you can play with! That’s not a typo in the title – think Wii with Words – Yum!

Airclicker: Finger and Gesture Navigation

Imagine twiddling your fingers in the air and making stuff happen on screens, augmented reality and just about any digital thing? Airclicker shows what it’s going to be like when we don’t need screens to slide our fingers across in the (near) future – just some funky rings or sub-dermal implants in your fingernails.

Interactive Projections and Installations | Lichtfaktor

A collective of artists, designers, technicians and apparently really cool visual digital folks, Lichtfaktor creates interactive projections (and lots of other stuff on their website) that are drop-dead, teeth-gnashingly cool.

Samsung Flexible AMOLED Technology

No release date yet, but Samsung’s demo video for their Flexible AMOLED Technology shows a transparent gadget which builds on existing touchscreen technology, incorporating text recognition, camera functions and a funky flexibility. NICE!

Match: Mixing Video and Social

There are piles of ways to find out what to watch, but instead of using ratings and ‘other people’ to figure out what you might like, just-out-of-Beta social video platform Matcha can sort content by the what’s newest, most popular, highly recommended (based on what programs you mark with a thumbs-up), or what your friends are watching. Once you’ve found what you’d like to stream, Matcha provides links to begin watching immediately. Matcha’s blog has interesting updates and behind-the-scenes look at making the service.

Tunes: Cocaine | The Internet (Little Dragon Remix)

I likes me some Odd Future and I loves me the Internet, so when I found out they had a spin-off ‘group’ called THE INTERNET, I was in. Here’s my techno naughty pleasure Little Dragon remixing their tune Cocaine.

FT86 Live Art Digital Billboard

Magisto Auto-Video Highlight Editor

Shoot lots of video that sits on your phones n’ pads n’ drives which you just have to edit ‘someday’? Y’all know how I loves me some robot-anything and this is my current favourite: Magisto offers a simple three-step process for turning videos of any length into veritable highlight reels. Let the algorithms do the work, you take the glory.

OKGO and Cuervo Pop-Up Gigs

Not the most compelling live act in the world, easily the best bit of anything attached to OKGO is the videos. I’m pretty sure that everyone in advertising has tried to get this idea made…am I right? Check out the behind-the-scenes stuff too.

Tripple Nippples: LSD

Freaky Japanese, Pharell Williams-approved electropop band, according to As stated by YVYNYL, this band could cause “a spontaneous black hole or a rip in the space-time continuum”. You had Pharell at spontaneous. Download LSD and DropOut!

Muppet CakePops

I was lucky enough to see the Muppets live on Saturday Night Live last weekend – and I loves me some Muppets. I like them even better when I can bake and eat them. If you’re the same, this Muppet Baking tutorial will come in handy!

Soda-Machine Medication Dispensers

Robert Gauldin’s new artwork answers your question: “I wonder what it would be like to get Xanax or other prescription meds from a dispensing machine?”

iTaxiTop | Geo- and Time-specific digital taxi advertising

The iTaxitop is a double sided digital advertising pod that sits on the roof of a taxi, enabling advertising messages to be targeted with geographic and time specific accuracy. It is also seriously cool. Get in quick for a demo like S&S London!

Interactive Projections – Disney SideBySide

Agency Incubators Grow New Technology

Every agency talks about copyrighting their ideas, creating their own products and generally making the idea product live longer and create on-going revenue streams. Too entrepreneurial for adshops? Here’s how a few hotshops are doing it.

Creative Social, Creative Looting and Comics

Last night I gave a 10-min, rapid-fire presentation for Creative Social here in London. The overall theme was ‘Creative Looting’ and my take dived into my shameless pilfering of 40+ years of comic collecting to inspire my work and the teams around me. The presentation I gave is here and clips from the speakers are here.

The (now longer) wait for Siri

Apple announced today that Siri will only be on iPhone 4S for the time being, which means that folks that have been hanging on since this clip teased us in 2010 will need to shuck out for some new gear (er, like me).

Two-Sides: Making Debates Classy (again)

I loves me some commenting on stuff and with TwoSides you can have a debate and plenty of info-graphic porn, too! Planners, strategists and other stat fiends: dig into this fast!

Disney AppMATes

My dog loves my iPad. Strangely, so do human children. I’m sure there’s something bad about getting kids hooked on touch-screens with branded entertainment like Disney AppMATesbut until we figure out why it’s bad we’re going to see lots of cool stuff like this.

Are QR codes bad? It might be your fault!

If you’ve been in a creative review in the last 3 years, at least one idea would have a QR code in it. You see them everywhere and on most everything, but does anyone really use them? A great article on where QR is and how we can help make it better and more useful.

Timberland, Live Events, QR and Mobile Sales

On the other hand, Timberland clearly doesn’t share the opinion that QR isn’t a cool, useful channel for sales, with the launch of events and QR-driven product info and mobile sales channel.

IBM THINK Installation

The press releases calls this an (ahem) ‘forest of interactivity’. I’d call it big, rad screens with lots of cool graphics that interact with the people who are around them, loosely describing how the world works and 100 years of IBM-ness. Prediction: this will be sliced into many a mood reel to come.

Bizwords: Mobile Game for Hilton Garden Inns

It’s Buzzword Bingo meets convenient, affordable business accommodation. Not sure how this encourages repeat use of the hotel chain, but you can download and play Bizwords next time you’re stuck in your hotel room.

Nerdy Day Trips

Geek or Nerd? One is worn as a badge of pride, the other a spells pocket protector, high-water pants and tape on glasses (and I’m not talking about the look I rocked in 6th grade). Whichever way you swing, you’ll dig these high-cheese, dorky destinations, conveniently geo-marked and tagged. Beware: you might get a tan while away from your screen.

Nerdy, but Awesome Drummers, Part 1: Neil Peart

Neil Peart is arguably the best rock drummer of all time (cue nerdy drummer debate) as well as cryptic lyricist and Ayn Rand devotee. But how good is his computer simulated self? Enjoy the real Neil bashing out YYZ, then check out the virtual Neil and compare the technique and the buffed-up guns on V-Neil.
